Well, I can’t vouch for NZ winter but over here in OZ, we Victorians have had enough of this loooooong, cold and wet weather and are fed up! It pains me to even write this, but we haven’t even had a chance to get out for a fish (total contradiction on my previous blog- oops!) Granted, life is busy and occasionally throws curve balls, so it isn’t always that easy. Fortunately, the weather Gods seem to be behaving and the sun has started shining more, so here’s hoping I may have some fishy shots to brag about next blog. So, for now, let’s talk seafood!

When it comes to culinary adventures, seafood dishes offer a treasure trove of flavours and health benefits. However, many people find themselves reluctant to cook with seafood, daunted by the unfamiliarity and perceived complexities associated with handling such scrumptious delicacies. Let’s explore the reasons behind this reluctance and hopefully I can change your thinking to be able to embrace cooking with seafood without fear.
I have had many people tell me that the thought of dealing with raw seafood, from cleaning to deboning, is too intimidating and some also believe that one wrong move could ruin the whole dish. These reasons then lead to avoidance, and they stick to cooking other protein. I hear you though, it’s daunting at the start and the following reasons are all the beliefs that even I had (many years ago) before I discovered my passion for cooking with seafood.
With an abundance of fish and shellfish species available, it can be challenging to know which ones to choose. Fear of picking the wrong seafood or not knowing how to cook it properly can also deter people from trying. Many people assume that seafood recipes are complicated and require advanced cooking skills, discouraging them from attempting to cook seafood. Therefore, start with easy recipes and slowly build up your repertoire.
Seafood’s perishable nature raises concerns about freshness and quality which is completely justified so always ensure you are buying your seafood from a credible source, or better yet, catch it yourself!
The distinctive odour associated with some seafood can be off-putting for those who are not accustomed to it, making them hesitant to cook it at home. The more you cook with seafood, the less overwhelming this will become.
Despite these apprehensions, there is a compelling reason why people shouldn’t fear cooking seafood and that is, that fresh fish and seafood, offers an array of health benefits that are hard to ignore.
Seafood is a nutritional powerhouse, rich in essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins (B12, D), minerals and high-quality protein. Regular consumption of seafood has been linked to numerous health benefits, including improved heart health, brain function, and reduced risk of chronic diseases.
Each type of seafood boasts a unique flavour profile, offering endless culinary possibilities. From delicate white fish like flathead and whiting to rich, robust options like salmon and tuna, there’s a seafood dish to suit every palate.
Contrary to popular belief, many seafood dishes are surprisingly simple to prepare. For instance, a pan-seared fillet of fish can be ready in minutes, making seafood an excellent option for quick and easy weeknight meals.
Seafood can be cooked in various ways, such as baking, grilling, steaming, frying, or even enjoying raw in the form of sushi or ceviche. This versatility ensures that there’s a cooking method suitable for every skill level.
How’d I go? Have I got you thinking? Cooking with seafood need not be an intimidating experience. By overcoming the reluctance to cook with fish and shellfish, home cooks can open themselves up to a world of delectable flavours and essential nutrients. So, the next time you catch a fish or head to your local seafood monger, be bold and bring home the ocean’s bounty, for your taste buds and well-being will undoubtedly thank you!
If I’ve got you motivated, then here’s a recipe to get you (and your friends) excited! Trust me when I say this is an easy recipe that not only looks bloody impressive but will also give you bragging rights for years to come!
