Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, the unpredictable nature of whiting offer anglers of all levels a challenge, and hopefully a delicious reward at the end!
Their nomadic nature means they are constantly on the move and can be found a lot of different environments – inshore, inside estuary systems with tidal influence, over sand flats and in weed beds. They hug the bottom and feed on worms and small prey over the sand.
Our new Tinga Stinga whiting rigs are designed to be fished in higher current areas, or in tidal waters. They can be fished in water of any depth, but they're magic when the current is moving quickly.
RIG DESIGN
The Tinga Stinga rig comes in 2 hook styles – a KL recurve hook or a long shank hook.
The rig’s design has a 500mm 15lb fluorocarbon backbone, with a 600mm long branch.
You can add your sinker to the tied loop which sits just under the 3-way swivel. This makes changing your sinker quick and easy.
This will keep your rig near the bottom where the whiting feed, and your bait will flow freely in the current.
FISHING WITH KL RECURVE HOOKS
Whiting have small mouths, so small baited hooks are recommended. Our legendary KL 01 hooks are a recurve hook which means they’ll usually hook your fish in the corner of the mouth. This makes it easier to remove the hook and improves your chances of a safe release should you choose to let your catch swim another day.
You don’t have to strike with KL recurve hooks.
When your fish takes the bait and starts to swim away, the hook will simply roll into the corner of the mouth and hook itself.
You can apply a small amount of pressure when you feel the fish take the bait, but don’t strike - you’ll rip the hook out of their mouth before it has time to penetrate the jaw, especially with whiting and their small mouths.
FISHING WITH LONG SHANK HOOKS
We’ve used our 06 sized long shank hooks on our Tinga Stinga rigs. Long shank hooks can improve the presentation of your bait, and you have more hook to grab when you’re trying to remove it.
Long shank hooks need to be set, so when you feel the fish start to swim off with the bait, you’ll need to strike your rod (lift it sharply). But keep in mind when fishing for whiting, if you strike too hard you could rip the hook and bait out of their mouth.
WHEN TO FISH WITH TINGA STINGA RIGS
Tinga Stinga rigs are designed to be fished in higher current environments, or areas affected by tides.
In Victoria (AUS) they’re ideal for fishing in Port Phillip Bay and Western Port Bay. The flat sandy bottom (with weed patches and areas of broken ground), and the tidal flow in and out of the bays, makes them an ideal hunting ground for whiting all year round.
GEAR GUIDE
We recommend your set up includes a light/medium action rod, with a sensitive tip to ensure you feel the bites, with a 2000-2500 reel. Spool your reel with 12lb Hyperglide® 13x Braid for ultimate casting and sensitivity.
The Tinga Stinga rigs come pre-tied on 15lb fluorocarbon, with a rolling swivel to connect the rig to your mainline.
Add a small piece of bait to your hooks, and you’re ready to fish. Whiting respond to a wide range of baits, but fresh is always best. You can use squid, pipis, mussels, crab, prawns, beach worms or pilchard.
