Choosing the right lure

The exhilarating pursuit that is game fishing combines strategy, patience, and skill. The challenge of targeting and catching the predators of the ocean, requires a gear set up designed to handle the strength and speed of these impressive fish.

Trolling a spread of skirted lures (ranging from 6 to 15 inches long) is the most common way to catch game fish. There are five lure positions - short corner, long corner, short rigger, long rigger, shotgun.

MARLIN

FAMILY - Istiophoridae

There are 11 species of marlin, all belonging to the Istiophoridae family which are among the fastest swimmers in the ocean.

They're a pelagic, predatory species which are closely related to swordfish (Xiphiidae).

Marlin are considered, by some, to be the pinnacle of recreation big game fishing due to their size, speed, power and elusiveness.

SOUTHERN BLUEFIN TUNA

SCIENTIFIC NAME - Thunnus maccoyii

FAMILY - Scombridae

There are 3 types of bluefin tuna – Atlantic (the largest and most endangered), Pacific and Southern.

Southern bluefin tuna (SBT) can grow up to160kg and over 2 metres in fork length. However, they are commonly caught in the 10 to 25kg size range. Fish over 70kg are considered "barrels" and any tuna over 120kg is an exceptional catch.

YELLOWFIN TUNA

SCIENTIFIC NAME - Thunnus albacares

FAMILY - Scombridae

Yellowfin are a migratory species, commonly found throughout the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, at depths up to 250 metres.

Yellowfin can grow to over 200kg (440lb) and 2.4 meters (7’10”) in length. In Australia, yellowfin are most commonly caught around 15 to 50kg, and anything over 100kg is a magnificent catch. While in New Zealand, you’ll commonly catch yellowfin around 15 to 45kg. Anything over 70kg would be classed as an incredibly big fish.
